These clever cats “decided to get married” over the phone while doing long distance across two states. “Within an hour, we had chosen a wedding date, venue, food, drinks, celebrant (one of our faves, Nat Sproal), photographer, initial guest list and agreed that the event would be a surprise wedding,” says the bride, who wore the sweetest midi number with standout heels. The dapper groom donned an Oscar Hunt Tailors suit and the pics were thanks to Kyra Boyer Photography. Scroll down for all you need to know (and see)…

THE VENUE “We’re both big foodies, so great food and wine was a must. We also wanted a small, intimate wedding so it needed to be a cozy space. French Saloon was a restaurant we both loved when it was operating as a restaurant (now a private events space only) and the Spring Street Events team was amazing right from our first email inquiry. They even agreed to recreate one of our old favourite French Saloon restaurant dishes for our menu. We didn’t look anywhere else.”

THE INSPO “The wedding itself was a surprise to guests, who we lured there by telling them we were hosting our 30th birthday/ farewell party before moving overseas. So our vibe was ‘not a wedding’ – a fun, party vibe with our closest family and friends.”

THE SUIT “I wanted a suit that would look relaxed and not be too stuffy or formal. I had in mind a thick wool suit in textured green which is a bit unusual so I knew it would need to be custom-made. Oscar Hunt Tailors in Sydney had the perfect fabric available and they helped me choose some of the other sartorial flares to fit the vibe. They really make the extra effort for it to be perfect and I couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out.”

MEMORABLE MOMENT “Definitely the big reveal. When Nat Sproal Celebrant announced in front of our family and friends that there would be a surprise wedding, the mood shift in the room when the announcement was made was really memorable. Kyra Boyer Photography captured some very raw and very special photos of these moments that we will treasure forever.”

A WORD OF ADVICE “Consider doing a surprise wedding! It took a lot of stress and pressure off the day. I (Beryl) have a bit of a wedding phobia, so having a relaxed, casual wedding that most people did not expect to be a wedding, was a great way to reduce the anxiety around having a big event. Also, go with experienced vendors – it will make your day so much smoother and stress-free. Our vendors’ experience spoke volumes – we put them in touch with each other and there was no on-the-day coordination required from us at all.”

WE’RE GLAD WE… “Didn’t stick to a theme or go with all the traditional wedding elements. Also, Nat Sproal Celebrant suggested that we did not read a draft copy of the ceremony before the day, so that the photos would capture our genuine reactions to the stories she told – this was a great idea!”

STANDOUT VENDORSKyra Boyer Photography was an absolute joy to work with –  she got our vibe immediately (even if it was a little unusual!) and just went with it, which is really important because you spend more time with your photographer(s) than any other vendor on the day. French Saloon / Spring Street Events were also incredible.”
