When we asked Duncan and Kyle what marriage means to them, they had some super-sweet words to share. “Feeling whole, balanced and complete with your better half,” they said, as well as, “building a life together, commitment and security.” Aww!

From the gorgeous stationery by Peppermint Press to the super-fun balloon installations, rich jewel tones set the vibe for this shindig, which was held at stunning Brissie venue The Refinery and captured by the talented Stories by Ash.  “The vibe was always going to be a big fun party,” Kyle tells us of the vision for the day. “We didn’t want our untraditional gay wedding to be bound by stuffy traditions. We opted for a cocktail-style event to bring different groups of friends together.” And as you can see by the beaut snaps, they got their wedding wish.

THE VENUE We already knew the venue we wanted before we were even engaged. I have been going to Rogue Bistro for more than eight years – before I met Duncan – and I somewhat  knew the owners, Rach and Dan. They happened to expand their restaurant into a wedding venue, The Refinery, and we’d been invited to their grand opening soon before we were engaged. The rest is history!”

MEMORABLE MOMENT Walking down the aisle to Intro by The XX. Before we got engaged, I already knew this was going to be the wedding song. I first heard the song at a friend’s wedding back in 2014. Before the ceremony started, our celebrant gave our guestS instructions to cheer, clap, howl AND whistle as loudly as they could as soon as we started walking down the aisle. It caught us by surprise as we didn’t expect it. That moment was truly amazing.”

FAVE DETAILSAt the very beginning of the ceremony, as the guests arrived, they were offered a glass of gin from a bespoke gin bar. Our cat, Luka (who is like our son), was pushed down the aisle in a pet pram by Duncan’s mother, which surprised everyone!”

WE’RE GLAD WE… “Having the gin bar prior to the ceremony was a good idea, as was having the DJ, Ben Shipway, from 3-11pm. It was such a vibe and everyone loved it.”

STANDOUT VENDORSHard to pick a favourite! But our celebrant, Erin Woodhall, was sooo much fun and exactly what we wanted for our wedding. She had the guests all in stitches with laughter, then tears during the ceremony, and back again. She instructed the guests (just like a teacher would) to go crazy and cheer their hearts out when we walked down the wedding, and they obliged! And the photos by Stories by Ash from the day captured everything just as we remembered, and enhanced the memories too.”
