When pastry chef-turned-specialty butcher Hannah met coffee-loving barista Troy back in high school, they bonded over “a love of indie music and drinking in parks”. Seven years later, the pair reconnected at Troy’s sister’s wedding and that spark was reignited! The sweet, simple proposal came on New Year’s Day 2019 over a picnic in the park, shares the groom. “We started chatting about our plans for the year (common theme for us!) and Hannah mentioned getting married. It flowed from there and ended with a piece of grass tied around Hannah’s finger as a faux engagement ring.” Could. Not. Love. This. More.

Fast-forward 11 months to the big day itself, when Hannah and Troy said ‘I do’ in front of 50 loved ones – and with Hello May fave Miranda Stokkel working her magic behind the camera, these guys have got some seriously gorgeous mementos of from the event. Lucky for us, they’re agreed to share the snaps – and groom Troy spilled all the deets!

THE VIBEOur main inspiration was to keep it as true to ourselves as we could. We had no running theme, however, drawing inspiration from our day to day lives, we knew we wanted to wear black (that’s what we feel most comfortable in) and the decorations to be bright and colourful. It was important to us to be comfortable rather than trying to stick to traditions.”

THE VENUE We both love spending time at the pub, it’s our favourite place to unwind and hang out. So we knew that’s where we wanted it to be. We considered many inner north pubs but settled on our local, Grandview Hotel Brunswick West, as it just felt right.”

FAVOURITE DETAILSHow the pub came together and how it looked was a standout to us. The owners, Rob and Liz, went above and beyond transforming their beer garden into an amazing ceremony space. We also loved how the upstairs reception space completely complemented our decoration and flower choices.”

DIYLots of DIY! Throughout the year, we had multiple family members making pompoms. Hannah’s sister Rachel did an amazing job of being our DIY maestro, stringing hundreds of pompoms together to make garlands and doing chalkboard sign writing. Rachel’s husband, David, also did all of our graphic design. Our fudge wedding favours were all made and bagged at home by Hannah and  Hannah’s dad, Mark, also made us an epic arch for the ceremony.”

THE DRESS “Hannah initially found a dress not long after the engagement at Lee Mathews. It was a beautiful black silk dress that she fell in love with straightaway, but as the year went on and after multiple try-ons, she became unsure. Ten days (!!!) before the wedding, she decided she needed a new dress. Friends and family jumped on board and everyone was trawling the internet looking for the perfect one. Hannah eventually found it on ASOS, of all places – it was inexpensive and not from a fancy label, but she knew it was ‘the one’. It arrived less than a week out from the wedding and luckily it fit like a glove!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTThe whole day was a highlight for us. Getting to have everyone that we love in one room was really special. We had people come from interstate, New Zealand and Dubai, so everyone finally being able to meet each other was amazing.”

A WORD OF ADVICEI would say that you shouldn’t be afraid to make the day your own. There’s very little you ‘have’ to do on the day, the rest you should not be afraid to have fun with. I think this is why we found that Jac the Hitcher was the perfect celebrant for us. From the start she let us know the legal parts we needed and then really customised the rest to make it a party.”

STANDOUT VENDORS “Our celebrant Jac the Hitcher and photographer Miranda Stokkel made the whole day so great. Having our photo taken doesn’t come naturally to us, but Miranda made the experience so fun and comfortable. This really came through in the photos. Jac’s ceremony was absolutely spot on for us and everyone commented afterwards about how unique and refreshingly different it was.”
