For this creative duo, their day jobs came in very handy on their big day. Rob (who is a cabinet maker) whipped up some incredible furniture, and Julia (an interior designer), was the stylist for the urban shebang while designing all the signage. They’ve been together for seven years and their day had all of the things (including the bride in a cast!), that lucky for us, were caught on camera by photographer and friend of Hello May, Elsa Campbell

LITTLE LOL“It’s a funny story now, but it was a bit scary at the time. I had a bit of a kitchen accident a week before the wedding. I slipped and cut through a tendon and nerve in my hand so I had to have emergency surgery. The Plastic Surgeon informed me that I would be in a splint/cast on my wedding day. It was a VERY painful week with a few tears and a lot of laughter. Poor Rob had to do all of his wedding ‘jobs’ and mine. I was really lucky and in the end, the medication and adrenaline took over on the wedding day and I didn’t feel a thing. It took a lot of pressure off the day and it became something that we all laughed about on the day.”

THE VENUE “We did a bit of research while we were in Europe, and just stumbled on Forty Five DownstairsWe kept coming back to it and by the time the holiday was up we had already tentatively booked it in. We landed back in Melbourne at around 6 am and went to see the venue at 11 am. It was the perfect space for us.”

FAVOURITE DETAILS The flowers! Ivy & Eve Flowers nailed it. I remember walking into the space for the first time and actually gasping. It was everything we had pictured in our heads and more. They’re incredible ladies who are so talented, I’m so happy we went with them. We trusted them completely with the idea and they did not disappoint.

DIY “Rob made the most BEAUTIFUL table for our cocktail hour. We couldn’t find a nice table on wheels that our caterers could put all the cheese and grazing foods on and then wheel out into the gallery space after the ceremony had concluded, so, my brilliant husband made this outrageously elegant black-stained, timber table. He also made all of the mesh plinths and painted plinths that made up our arbour design and wishing well/seating chart. The Ivy & Eve Flowers ladies then came in and made it look amazing.”

THE DRESS “I bought my dress online! I just kept coming back to it and knew it was the dress for me. I bought it from BHLDN– it took me about two months to officially decide. It was the perfect price and I loved the ease of it. The thought of going to bridal showrooms made me feel a bit uneasy- it’s just not my vibe at all. I also changed into a jumpsuit from Rebecca Vallance. I’m not a huge gown kind of gal so as soon as the cocktail hour was over, I changed into the jumpsuit so I could get down on the dancefloor.”

WE’RE GLAD WEDid the photos and portraits before the ceremony. It meant that we could go straight into cocktail hour and get to properly mingle with all of our guests. Plus cocktail hour is one of the best parts of the wedding as if we’d want to miss that!”

STANDOUT VENDORS “Firstly, Elsa Campbell, our legendary photographer. She’s the coolest cat and so chilled out. We felt very comfortable with her and our videographer Matt (from C2 Films). The guys at Forty Five Downstairs are, absolute ANGELS. They went above and beyond. Lara Williams, our celebrant, was out of this world. Everyone thought she had known us for years! She absolutely knocked it out of the park. Our DJ, Yo!Mafia, was also a huge part of the success of the night. The dance floor was packed the whole night and the music couldn’t have been more perfect- it was one big party. We also can’t go past the guys at Ed Dixon Food Design the food was amazing and the service was even better.”
