Together for “two kids and a dog long” (aka nine years), Sue and Jamie had two things on their mind for their big day… food and wine. To celebrate their near-decade of loving, these two locked in the feast to rule them all at one of their favourite restaurants, Mr. Wong, which was also a nod to Sue’s heritage, after a jolly good ceremony under their wedding chuppah, a celebration of Jamie’s Jewish background. Lara Hotz got it all on camera and boy are we happy about it. Read on for all the deets…

THE VENUEAnyone who knows us well, knows that we are massive foodies so making sure our guests had the best food and wine of any wedding they’d been to was important to us. We knew our ultimate was to have it at Mr. Wong and hadn’t considered anywhere else… there wasn’t a lot of time for Plan B’s.”

THE INSPOMy (Sue-Lyn) father had been unwell for some time, and we decided on a whim to tie the knot while he could be there. Because we only had three weeks, we just wanted a ceremony and reception that reflected both our respective cultures in the presence of our closest friends and family. We knew we wanted our party to be glam and fun but because it was short notice, it also needed to be local and practical. The florals, candles, custom placemats, menus and place cards really made it our own.”

FAVE DEETSFlowers – Sean [of Mr Cook] is a magician. The plumes of hydrangeas around the chuppah and trail of flowers from the woman on the wall down along the bar at Mr. Wong were spectacular. Merivale also supplied the Tony Assness candles which were incorporated with the florals and made for the perfect setting.”

THE DRESS “I had always wanted a dress from Pallas, and very fortunately was able to get the most beautiful gown within our short timeframe… It was the first dress I tried on and I knew I had found the one straight away. The team at Pallas Couture was so lovely and accommodating and was able to turn the alterations around so quickly. I wore the detachable sleeves for the ceremony and took them off for the reception, it was like having two dresses.”

MEMORABLE MOMENT “Walking down the aisle with my dad. That was the moment the whole wedding was planned around, and it was perfect.”

COOL CUSTOMS “Jamie is Jewish and I am of Chinese heritage and we wanted to give a nod to both our cultures on the day. We got married under a chuppah and did the Jewish tradition of breaking the glass, and then we had an amazing Chinese feast at Mr. Wong after.”

MARRIAGE MEANS… “There’s one quote that rings true… ‘Relationships are just two people constantly asking each other where they want to go eat until one of them dies.’ We’re now officially committed to annoying each other in this cycle for the rest of our lives.”

STANDOUT VENDORS “The standout would definitely be our photographer Lara Hotz. Amazing artistry aside, she is just so genuine and warm – we were so excited she agreed to capture the story of our day. Her photos aren’t just memories, but captured emotions in those moments too. With her experience, she helped us finalise the run sheet for the day and also helped keep everything on track, but above and beyond doesn’t describe the beautiful surprise she had organised the following day where she personally hand-delivered a selection of the best photos to the hospital where my father was staying so he could see them before he got too ill. I was and still am so overwhelmed by her kindness.”

Sue and Jamie’s stunning city wedding was originally published in Hello May’s 2021 Real Wedding Special which you can find on our online store, along with a free Issue 36. Winning! You can catch more from their fave person and vendor, photographer, Lara Hotz, too. She was also the lady behind the lens for Nic & Jamie and Bree & Brooke. But first, scroll down…
