Together for ten years now, “we have miraculously survived without murdering each other, so that has to be a testament of true love and tolerance (lol),” these two cool cats are truly one of a kind and we couldn’t wait to share this wedding. Yes, ok, it may have had something to do with that cray-in-the-best-way wedding dress. And definitely the groom in camo. Also maybe those incredible dried flower arrangements (by one of our fave florists Laurel & Lace). Then there was the ceremony by one of our go-to celebrants, Shannon O’Heir, and pics by the talented lens lady Lauren Campbell. THE VENUE “When we started looking into venues, I saw that the Ovolo Nishi had event spaces. Architecturally, the exterior and interior are so aesthetically pleasing and like a work of art themselves that in terms of a venue, it was so different, untraditional and exactly what we were looking for. In terms of the ceremony venue, aMBUSH Gallery had the minimalist look of our dreams. It was like everything had aligned in our favour, the space had a large balcony, floor to ceiling windows, polished cement floors and their events contact person Elisa let us know that we would be the first wedding they would be holding in that space.”
THE INSPO “Actually started from our choice in wedding outfits. Joel and I both chose our own wedding outfits which by chance both happened to be Comme des Garcons – Junya Watanabe designed pieces. From the sculptural shape of my dress and both having unique prints, I wanted to pay homage to that elevated Japanese fashion feel, so the theme was to incorporate fashion, art, design, and an earthy, tribal take on a modern bride/ wedding (which developed from my choice of reception outfit and jewellery for the day). Another theme we incorporated was warm/ Autumnal tones, which we chose to display through our florals, to work with our wedding suite (mandarin orange) colour palette and link these design elements together.”
FAVE DETAILS “Definitely our invites. I studied graphic design, so designing and having the physical invite to send out to guests was an important aspect of the day to me, which ended up helping to create consistency between the invites and on the day. Another favourite detail on the day was our cake. I wanted the cake to match the art/design-focused theme I wanted to portray on the day, without being an obvious wedding cake. I knew I wanted a textural cake, with cement looking colours incorporated (so it was almost reminiscent of textural paintings) and I explained that brief with some inspo photos to La Ombre Creations, leaving the creative interpretation up to her. I still have friends to this day remind me of how amazing the cake was (both in flavour and visually).”
THE DRESS “I found it on an online boutique in Italy that specialises in avant-garde clothing (or radical fashion – in their words). I’m not someone to typically wear dresses so I knew going in that I didn’t want to wear a traditional wedding dress. As soon as I laid eyes on the dress I knew it was the one. It just had this amazing structure and sculptural silhouette and was so aesthetically breath taking, that I knew I wasn’t going to look any further.”
REFERENCES “Through either the Hello May magazine or website, I first saw the Mrs. Fray boutique mentioned, which lead me to their Instagram page. They happened to have a pop up at the Ovolo Nishi that weekend which Joel and I went to see, and the room was set up with these amazing floral arrangements that I found out was Laurel & Lace. It was almost a snowball effect from there as through Lauren Campbell’s website we found our celebrant Shannon O’Heir Marriage Celebrant who was so refreshingly modern and funny that she fit the vibe of what Joel and I wanted for the day, so it all came together fairly quickly.”
A WORD OF ADVICE “I recommend creating an Instagram page (or Pinterest) to gather inspiration images as it creates an online moodboard and helps you stay on track for the theme/style/vibe of your wedding. It was also an easy way to share our vision with our vendors (our florist and photographer followed the page) and hopefully helped them gather inspiration of what we were trying to portray on the day.”

STANDOUT VENDORS “Laurel & Lace absolutely nailed our florals. We instantly connected. Viewing the gallery space together to discuss ideas turned into us grabbing a beer afterwards and chatting all things non-wedding for a few hours. I was truly blown away when I saw our bouquets, as they were better than anything I could have expected. It wasn’t just us that loved her work, we had so many compliments on the day and after the wedding about how amazing our floral arrangements were set up at both the gallery and reception space. Lauren Campbell, our photographer, was amazing – in the few days leading up to our wedding day when COVID space recommendations were first being mentioned and we didn’t know if our wedding would be able to go ahead. She was so accommodating. On the day she made us feel so comfortable and like a true photography magician, she was able to capture amazing moments without us even realising she was obviously there. Shannon O’Heir Marriage Celebrant was down from the onset to completely cater our ceremony to our needs, which for me was taking as much attention of us as possible. I didn’t want anything overly sentimental and she was able to make our ceremony completely light-hearted, full of laughs and had the brilliant idea of sharing stories about our bridal party so the spotlight was shared, which put me at ease. Our hands-down godsend was Elisa who was the gallery and events coordinator for aMBUSH Gallery in Canberra. [Also] Sam from Artforme Letterpress Studio, Saadia of La Ombre Creations was amazing.”
