Meet Amy and Mat, two fun-loving folks, who turned their Italian aperitivo-meets-iconic backyard arvo sesh dreams into a chilled Fremantle wedding. After a “simple, sweet” proposal during a morning beach walk, complete with Kate & Kole ring and the couple’s dog, Bowie, the pair got started planning their big day. “The theme was inspired by the holidays we’ve had together in the Mediterranean and the years we’ve spent living in the Freo area,” they tell us. Described in three words? “Vibrant, relaxed and delicious.” Paris Hawken was the lady behind the lens and we couldn’t be happier, so scroll down for all…

FAVE DEETSOur flowers were done by our friend Laura Brown who had never done flowers for a wedding on her own before. We gave her a very modest budget and she worked absolute magic. We can’t go past all the fruit and vegetables (real and fake) that were scattered everywhere. And Amy’s sister designed our invites and welcome sign and they were perfect as well.”

THE DRESS “I bought around 10 dresses online over the course of the year (returned them along the way!). I always knew it wasn’t important to me to have a ‘wedding dress’ or spend a lot of money – I never went to any wedding dress shops. I just looked online for something that I’d like – white or not. The first time I bought my dress I returned it, and then bought it again a few months later because I kept coming back to it in my head. I felt so comfortable in it – I wear a lot of t-shirts so I felt like myself.”

A WORD OF ADVICE “Make lists, prioritise your budget for things that you really care about, and try to enjoy the lead-up and days after as much as the day itself because it’s over in a flash.”

TALK ABOUT TRADITION “We actually sneakily did our paperwork at the Perth Marriage Registery Office two days prior. It was a lovely intimate day with our closest family. We didn’t know at the time, but on the day, Amy’s dad told us it was also the wedding anniversary of his parents (who both passed away in 2021). It was so special – we told everyone at the wedding in our speech.”

WE’RE GLAD WE…Did our wedding party photos before the ceremony! We walked from our accommodation to one of our favourite beer gardens – Percy Flint – in South Fremantle. This was all planned – we wanted photos doing one of our favorite things – having pints with friends. It was so relaxed and special, and we were all buzzing in our outfits.”

STANDOUT VENDORS “About 50% of our vendors were friends (professionals, or just doing us favours). It was the best – we felt so loved. Out of the formal vendors – Maisey Event Hire was great to work with – so responsive and accommodating. We used them for all our furniture as well as the arbor structure and plinths.”

Amy and Mat’s wedding was originally featured in Issue 36 of Hello May, which you can find here. Bonus: Buy it online via our store and you’ll get another copy for free! Don’t say we do nothing for you, friends! But first, you know what to do…
